Japan Has an Old Word for the Wave That Catches People on a Clear Day. The Storm Making It Can Be a Thousand Kilometres Away.

There is a storm out over the open Pacific this week, several hundred kilometres east of Japan, going nowhere in particular. It is not forecast to make landfall. It is not forecast to affect the main islands directly at all.

And forecasters have been telling people planning a day at the beach to be careful anyway.

That combination sounds like over-caution until you understand what is actually travelling toward the coast, which is not the storm. It is the water the storm pushed around days ago, arriving on its own schedule, under a completely clear sky.

Wind waves and swell are not the same thing

The Japan Meteorological Agency splits ocean waves into two categories, and the split is the whole point.

The first is what it calls wind waves. These are the waves being made right now, in front of you, by the wind you can feel. Choppy, irregular, short. When the wind drops, they drop with it. This is the sea most people have a mental model for, and it is the reason people assume a calm sky means a calm sea.

The second is swell. Swell is what is left over. It is wind waves that were generated somewhere else entirely and have kept travelling after leaving the wind that made them, or that remain after the wind has died away. The agency describes them as rounder and more regular in shape than wind waves, with a longer period and a longer wavelength.

That description sounds gentle. Long, rounded, regular. It is not gentle, and the geometry is exactly why.

A long wavelength means a lot of water is moving in each wave. A long period means they arrive spaced out, so the sea between them looks unremarkable. And because swell has already separated from the weather that created it, there is nothing overhead to warn you. No wind, no cloud, no falling pressure. Just a bigger set arriving every so often on an otherwise ordinary afternoon.

The distances involved are the part that surprises people. According to the JMA's own explanation, high swell is sometimes observed thousands of kilometres from where it was generated (it sets this out on its page on typhoons and waves, in Japanese).

Think about what that means for timing. The waves leave the storm and then travel independently of it, and the long ones travel fast. So the swell can reach a coast well before the storm would have, and it can keep reaching that coast after the storm has already weakened, changed direction, or fallen apart entirely. The connection between the two is real, but it is a connection separated by days and by a lot of open water.

This is also why "the typhoon missed us" is such a poor summary of what happened. The typhoon missing you says something about the wind. It says almost nothing about the water.

Doyonami

Japan has had a name for this for a very long time.

The word is doyonami. Doyō is a period in the traditional calendar at the tail end of summer, and the agency notes that people have historically used doyonami to describe the high waves that push onto Pacific-facing coasts from summer into autumn, and used it specifically to warn about them.

So this is not a modern meteorological discovery. It is a folk observation that turned out to be correct, made by people who noticed that the sea on their coast sometimes went dangerous on days when nothing at all was happening in their sky, and who worked out that it had to be coming from somewhere over the horizon.

The mechanism they could not have known about is the one that makes it dangerous now: typhoon season overlaps with beach season almost perfectly. The Pacific coast of Japan gets its swimming weather at exactly the time of year when there are storms out over the western Pacific generating swell that will reach it in a day or two.

The agency also flags a specific failure mode. When several sets happen to line up, crest on crest and trough on trough, you get what Japanese uses two names for, sankakunami and ippatsu-oonami, roughly triangular waves and one-shot big waves. Those are the ones that pick somebody off a rock or drag a swimmer out with no warning at all.

That word ippatsu, one shot, is doing a lot of work. It is not describing a sea that is generally rough. It is describing an otherwise manageable sea that produces one wave much larger than the rest, once, at a moment nobody chose. You cannot read that off the surface in advance, and you cannot outrun it if you are standing somewhere you had to climb down to.

It is a very old word for something that modern wave physics describes in almost exactly the same terms, which I find quietly impressive every time I think about it.

Which brings us to this week

The system involved is the seventeenth typhoon of the season, named Nangka, which formed near the Ogasawara Islands on 12 August and then spent several days wandering slowly around the waters near Minami-Torishima, well out in the open Pacific. It weakened steadily. By the evening of 14 August it was down to a tropical depression.

Its track never brought it to Japan. Model guidance kept it over open water east of the country throughout, with no landfall indicated at any point.

Despite that, forecasters were warning that depending on its path there was a possibility of high wave effects reaching eastern Japan, and the wording on marine recreation was direct. Those planning things like sea bathing, it said, need to be especially careful.

That is a warning about a storm that, from the point of view of anyone standing on a beach in Japan, was never going to show up.

What this looked like where I used to live

I spent seven years in the Philippines, and the thing I eventually got used to was not the storms. It was the announcements.

The sea would be closed. Not the airport, not the roads, not the schools, none of the things that make it obvious something is happening. Just the sea. And the sky over your head would be doing nothing whatsoever to justify it.

The first several times, that felt like an overreaction, and I suspect everybody who moves to an archipelago goes through the same phase. It stops feeling like an overreaction once you understand that a coastguard suspending sea travel is not looking at the sky above the port. It is looking at what is happening several hundred kilometres out, and at what has already left there and is on its way in.

The forecast you can see out of a window is not the forecast that matters for water. That took me an embarrassingly long time to internalise.

The other thing seven years teaches you is that the people who get hurt are almost never the ones who ignored a storm. Storms are easy. Everybody takes a storm seriously, because a storm announces itself. The trouble arrives on the good days, the ones after a system has passed or the ones where it stayed offshore, when the beach reopens in people's heads before it reopens in fact.

Japan built a word for this. Most places did not, and mostly just call it a freak wave afterwards, which is a way of saying nobody saw it coming rather than a way of saying nobody could have.

How to check before you get in

None of this requires you to become an amateur forecaster. It requires one extra look.

Check whether there is a tropical system anywhere in the basin, not just near you. If there is a storm within a couple of thousand kilometres of the coast you are standing on, swell from it is at least plausible, even if the forecast has it going nowhere near you. The JMA publishes its typhoon information in English at jma.go.jp, and its wave and marine warnings sit alongside it.

Japan publishes warnings by area on the JMA hazard map, and wave warnings sit there as their own item. Read them separately from wind warnings. They are separate products for a reason, and on a swell day the wave warning will be active while nothing else is.

Watch the sets rather than the surface. Swell arrives in groups with quiet water in between, so the two minutes you spend looking at the shore before you walk in can easily land inside a lull. Give it ten.

Be more suspicious of rocks and breakwaters than of open beach. Almost every one-shot big wave story involves somebody standing on something solid, because standing on something solid is what makes a person feel safe enough to stop watching.

And if the local authority has closed the water, that is not a suggestion, and it is not about the weather where you are.

The strange part is that the dangerous version of this never looks dangerous. A storm you can see coming gets everyone's attention for free. It is the flat blue afternoon, a thousand kilometres downstream of something that has already fallen apart, that gets people.
