This is the only contact address for the site. There is no contact form, no phone number and no postal address, and nobody here will ever ask you for one.

How long a reply takes

Every message is read. A reply normally takes two to four days, and longer when I am travelling, which is a reasonable part of the year. If a week has passed with no answer, the message did not arrive — send it again rather than assuming it was ignored. Mail from unfamiliar addresses occasionally lands in spam at this end, and a second message usually gets through.

Corrections

If something on this site is wrong, please say so. Factual corrections are welcome and they are acted on rather than argued with.

The most useful correction tells me three things: which page, which sentence, and what the correct figure or fact is. A link to the agency or source you are working from makes it faster still. Where a correction changes the substance of an article, the article is updated and the change is noted in it rather than made silently. Where it is a typo or a broken link, it is simply fixed.

Forecast figures, warning thresholds and agency procedures all change over time, and pages written during one season can fall out of date. Corrections of that kind are just as welcome as corrections of outright errors.

Photographs and copyright

Images on this site come from three places: public-domain satellite imagery from NASA Worldview, photographs from Wikimedia Commons used under their stated licences, and material produced for the site. Every Wikimedia image carries a caption naming the photographer and the licence, with links to both the file page and the licence text.

If you are the copyright holder of an image used here and the attribution is wrong, incomplete, or the image should not be in use at all, write to the address above and it will be corrected or the image removed. Requests of this kind are handled ahead of everything else in the inbox, and no proof of ownership beyond a straightforward explanation is required to get an image taken down while the question is sorted out.

UPDATE — 11 August 2026. There is a live storm on Japan right now, and it is not Dolphin. Chan-hom — Typhoon No. 15 in the Japanese numbering, 14W to the JTWC — is approaching the Pacific coast today. Current guidance has it coming ashore in the northern Kanto region, around Ibaraki and Fukushima, late on Tuesday 11 August into the early hours of Wednesday , passing roughly 160 km from Tokyo rather than over it. Peak intensity is forecast near 25 m/s sustained with gusts to about 35 m/s, and central pressure near 980 hPa, before it crosses Honshu, enters the Sea of Japan on the 12th and falls apart by the 13th. TCCOR Levels Explained (TCCOR 5, TCCOR 1, All Clear)

Most alert scales count upward as the danger rises. TCCOR counts down, and it counts hours rather than severity — which makes it the rare system where the number tells you how much time you have left rather than how bad things are. That is genuinely useful if you are trying to plan a day, and it is why the scale is worth reading even if you have no connection to a US installation. Every level on it is a statement about one threshold: destructive winds of 50 knots, and how many hours away they are. What TCCOR actually measures Every level is defined against one specific wind speed, and knowing it makes the rest of the scale obvious. Destructive winds means 50 knots sustained, or gusts of 60 knots. In miles per hour that is about 58. That is the threshold the entire system is built around, and it is not a typhoon threshold. Laos in the Rainy Season (Rainfall by Month, Route 13, What Actually Closes)

Almost every guide to Laos says the same thing about the rainy season, which is that it runs roughly May to October and that you should go in the dry season instead. That is not wrong, but it is not much use either, because it collapses six quite different months into one warning and it never says what the rain actually stops you doing. The useful version of this question is narrower. How much rain, on how many days, and does it close the specific thing you were going for.
