What a Hurricane Actually Sounds Like, and Why the Noise Is the Part Nobody Warns You About

Search for what a hurricane sounds like and you get video clips, a Reddit thread, a Quora answer, and a page of free sound effects. That tells you something. There is no good written account of it, so people go looking for recordings instead, and recordings do not work, because a phone microphone flattens the one quality that makes the sound difficult to be around.

I have been through typhoons in the Philippines, in Korea, on Jeju Island, and in Phu Quoc. The wind and the water were the things I expected. The sound was not, and it is the part I remember most clearly from every one of them.

So this is a written version. What it actually sounds like, why it affects people the way it does, and the strange silence in the middle that catches everybody off guard.

It is not a howl. It is a pressure you hear

The description everybody reaches for is a freight train, and it is not a bad comparison for the loudest part, but it gives the wrong impression of the experience because a train passes.

This does not pass. It arrives over a few hours and then stays, and the volume moves in long swells rather than gusts. It builds, sits at a level that fills the whole room, drops slightly, then builds again. There is no rhythm you can settle into and no gap you can rest in. That constancy is what wears you down, more than the peak volume.

Layered on top of it is everything the wind is doing to the building. Window frames flex and creak. Something metal on the roof or a neighbouring balcony works loose and starts a repetitive banging you cannot identify or reach. Rain does not fall so much as get thrown horizontally at the glass in bursts, which sounds nothing like heavy rain and much more like gravel.

And then there are the sounds from outside that you hear before you understand them. In the street, motorcycles go over. You do not see it happen. You hear the flat metallic sound of one hitting the ground and then, at some point later, another one, and you work out from your room what has just happened out there.

Why people turn the television up

Here is the thing I did that I have since heard from a lot of other people who have been through the same nights. I turned the television up. Not to watch it. To have something else in the room.

That reaction sounds trivial written down and it is not. The problem with the sound is not that it is loud, it is that it is unrelenting and it carries information you do not want. Every change in it makes you look up. Every new noise makes you work out what broke. Sitting inside that for six or eight hours is genuinely tiring in a way that people do not anticipate, and putting a familiar noise into the room gives your attention somewhere else to go.

The nights are worse than the days, and by a wide margin. You cannot see what is happening, so every sound gets assigned to the worst thing it might be. On top of that the thunder in these storms is not like normal thunder. It is close, it is frequent, and it comes without the slow build you are used to. There were nights where that was the part that actually frightened me, more than the wind.

If you are somewhere near the water, add one more layer. On Jeju the house was beside the sea, and through the night you can hear the waves getting bigger. Not a change in the wind, a change in the sea itself, getting louder and heavier hour by hour. There is nothing you can do with that information at two in the morning, and you listen to it anyway.

The silence in the eye

Then, if the storm passes directly over you, everything stops.

This is the part that no recording conveys and that people are genuinely unprepared for. Outside is chaos, and then within a short stretch of time the wind falls away and the sky opens up and it is calm and clear. After hours of noise, the quiet is disorienting rather than relieving. The change is too large to feel like weather.

And it is quiet in a specific way. What is missing is the background. No cicadas, no birds. In a hot country you do not consciously register that layer of insect and bird noise until it is gone, and in the eye it is gone completely. That absence is what makes it feel wrong rather than peaceful.

This is also the most dangerous moment of the whole storm, for exactly the reason that it feels like the end. It is not the end. It is the middle. The far wall of the eye is coming, and when it arrives the wind comes from the opposite direction, which means anything that was sheltered for the first half is exposed for the second. People go outside during the eye to look at the damage, and that is when they get caught.

Why a recording never sounds like the real thing

People go looking for clips and come away thinking it sounds like a strong wind, which is fair, because that is all a clip can be.

Part of it is technical. A phone microphone compresses loud sound, so the swells that make the real thing exhausting get flattened into an even hiss. The low end, which is the part you feel through the floor and the window frames, does not survive recording at all and would not come through a laptop speaker if it did.

The bigger part is that a recording is thirty seconds. The quality that defines the experience is duration. Anyone can sit through half a minute of loud noise. The thing being described is the fifth hour of it, at two in the morning, with no indication of when it stops.

And a recording removes the context that makes each sound matter. In a clip, a bang is a bang. In the room, a bang is something that just broke, and you spend the next while working out whether it was yours.

Nobody mentions this part, and it is the one that surprised me.

When the storm finally lifts, what you get is not normal. It is genuinely quiet, because the birds and insects that make up the ordinary background have not come back yet, and they take a while. Into that quiet come the sounds of the aftermath, which are entirely human: generators starting up one by one across a neighbourhood, people clearing things, metal being dragged.

If the power is out across a district, the quality of the quiet changes as well. No air conditioning, no refrigerator hum, no transformers. Cities have a floor of noise that you never hear until it stops, and after a serious storm you hear it stop.

That first morning is when people go outside and look at things, and it is oddly subdued. The reason is partly the damage and partly that everybody has been awake all night listening to the same thing.

What this means for actually getting through it

Take the noise seriously as a thing to plan for, not just as atmosphere.

Have something to put in the room. Music, a downloaded film, anything. This is not a comfort suggestion, it is the difference between a manageable night and eight hours of listening to a building being tested. Download it in advance, because your connection may not survive the storm even if your power does.

Expect the night to be harder than the day, and get whatever sleep you can before dark rather than saving it.

Do not try to identify every sound. Most of what you hear is something outside being moved around, and it is not information you can act on. The sounds worth reacting to are close and structural, and you will know the difference.

Put a door between yourself and the windows if you can. This is worth doing for safety anyway, but it also cuts a surprising amount of the noise, and an interior room is a noticeably easier place to spend the night than a room with glass in it.

If you are with other people, and especially with children, say out loud in advance that it is going to be loud for a long time and that the noise itself is not a sign that something is wrong. Almost all of the alarm comes from interpreting volume as danger. Naming it beforehand takes most of that away.

And when it goes quiet, do not go outside.

The part I would tell someone before their first one

People prepare for a hurricane visually. They think about water coming in, glass breaking, the roof. Those are the right things to prepare for materially.

But what people describe afterwards, months later, is almost always the sound. The constancy of it, the thunder, the sea getting louder, and then the silence in the middle with no birds in it. That is the part that stays.

Knowing that in advance does not make it quieter. It does make it a lot less frightening, because most of what makes the noise hard is not knowing what it is going to do next.
