What the Eye of a Hurricane Is Actually Like: I Stood In One, and the Silence Was the Strange Part
The textbook answer is easy to find. The eye is the calm centre of a tropical cyclone, a column of sinking air where the winds drop and the clouds break, surrounded by the eyewall where the strongest winds in the entire storm are found. Every agency page says a version of that, and it is correct.
What those pages do not prepare you for is the experience of it, because on paper the eye reads as a pleasant interlude. In practice it is one of the strangest things I have been outside in, and the detail that stayed with me was not the sky. It was the sound.
I have been through storms in the Philippines, in Korea, on Jeju Island and in Phu Quoc, and only once did the centre pass directly over where I was standing. This is what that was like, and then what is actually happening when it does.

The part nobody writes down
Outside had been chaos for hours. The kind of wind where you stop thinking of it as weather and start thinking of it as a force acting on the building.
And then it just stopped.
Not eased off. Stopped. And the sky opened. Clear blue, direct sun, the sort of afternoon you would plan a trip around. If you had walked outside at that exact moment with no context, you would not have believed a storm was anywhere in the region, let alone directly around you. That is the part that is genuinely difficult to convey. It does not look like a break in the weather. It looks like a different day entirely.

So I went out. Of course I went out. Everyone does.
And standing there, looking up at this ridiculous blue sky, what struck me was that I could not hear anything. No cicadas. No birds. In that part of the world, at that time of year, cicadas are a constant background you stop noticing until it is gone, and it was gone. Total quiet, bright sun, no wind. I have never experienced anything like it before or since.
It did not last. The rain came back and I got inside quickly, which in hindsight was the correct instinct even though at the time it was just a reaction to getting wet.

Why the sky opens like that
The mechanics are straightforward once you see the storm in cross-section rather than from above.
A mature tropical cyclone is a rotating system where air spirals inward and rises, forming the towering wall of cloud that produces the rain and the wind. But at the very centre, some of that air sinks back down instead. Sinking air warms and dries as it descends, which prevents cloud from forming. That is the eye: a relatively clear column punched through the middle of the storm, where winds are light and the sky can be completely open.
Around it is the eyewall, a ring of the tallest cloud and the fiercest wind in the whole system. The eyewall is where the damage is done. When people describe a storm hitting, what they are describing is the eyewall arriving.

The size varies considerably. Some eyes are tens of kilometres across, some are much smaller and tighter. A small, well-defined eye generally indicates a strong, well-organised storm, which is one of those facts that feels backwards until you think about it. The calmest-looking part of the picture is the sign that the rest of it is at its worst.
As for the silence, I do not have a citation for why the insects stopped, and I am not going to invent one. What is documented is that birds sometimes end up caught inside the eye, travelling along with the storm because the eyewall is effectively a wall they cannot cross. Whether the quiet I noticed was the same phenomenon or simply everything alive having taken shelter, I genuinely do not know. I only know it was completely silent, and that it was the thing I remembered afterwards, more than the sky.
Why walking outside is the dangerous part
Here is what makes the eye more than a curiosity, and it is the reason this is worth understanding rather than just reading about.
The eye is the middle of the storm, not the end of it. When it has passed over you, the other side of the eyewall arrives, and it arrives with the same intensity as the first half.
The wind then comes from the opposite direction. That sounds like a technical detail and it is actually the whole problem. Everything around you has just spent hours being pushed one way. Trees are leaning, roofing is loosened, signage is half detached, branches are hanging. All of that is now hit from the other side, and things that survived the first half by leaning into the pressure fail immediately when the pressure reverses.
This is where people get hurt. Not during the loudest part, when nobody is going anywhere. During the quiet part, when it looks finished and everyone comes out to check on the car.
The eye can take anywhere from several minutes to over an hour to pass, and there is no way to know from standing in it how long you have. If you are ever in one, the honest advice is to treat it as an intermission and not a conclusion. Check that everyone is fine, move anything that is going to become a projectile, and get back inside. If you are not certain the centre has actually passed rather than the storm merely easing, assume it has not.

How to tell an eye from the storm simply easing off
This is the practical question, and it is worth knowing because the two feel similar for about the first minute and then diverge completely.
A storm weakening or moving away eases. The wind drops in stages, gusts get further apart, the rain thins out, and the cloud stays. It is grey. It stays grey. That process takes a while and it feels gradual the entire time.
An eye does not do any of that. It is abrupt, and the sky changes. That is the tell that is hard to mistake once you have seen it: cloud breaking to actual blue, or at night, stars. Weather that is merely calming down does not hand you direct sunlight.
The second tell is the direction the wind was coming from before it stopped. If you know that, you know roughly where you are relative to the centre, and you know that when it returns it will be coming at you from the other side. Noticing which way the trees were bending is a strangely useful thing to have paid attention to.
The third is simply to check. In a hurricane or typhoon you almost always have a phone with some signal, and the position of the centre is public information updated constantly. Thirty seconds of looking is worth more than any amount of standing outside guessing.
If you get all three and they agree, you have some time. If they do not agree, you do not. Either way the answer is the same: whatever you need to do outside, do it now rather than in ten minutes.
What is worth doing with the time
Assuming you have established that it is genuinely the eye and you have a window of some length, there is a short list that is actually worth doing, and a longer list of things people do instead.
Worth doing: look at your own building, quickly. Loose roofing, a gutter that has come away, a panel that is half off. Anything hanging is going to be hit from the opposite direction shortly and will come down. Move vehicles away from trees that are already leaning, if that is possible in the time you have. Bring in anything left outside that can fly. Fill water containers if the supply is still on.
Not worth doing: driving anywhere. Going to look at the sea. Walking around the neighbourhood to see the damage, which is the single most common thing people do and the reason the second half is more dangerous than the first. The damage will still be there in six hours and so will you, which is the better arrangement.

And if you are somewhere with standing water, stay out of it. Downed power lines are invisible in it, and after the first half of a storm there is a decent chance at least one is down somewhere nearby.
The thing I would tell anyone
If you get the chance to stand in an eye, you will remember it, and I am not going to pretend I regret going outside.
But I did not fully understand at the time that the second half was coming, and that the reason it looked like the storm was over was precisely because I was standing in the middle of it. The sun on your face is not the storm finishing. It is the storm being organised enough to have a hole in the centre.
Go and look, if it is safe where you are and someone who knows the local conditions says the centre has arrived. Then go back in before the quiet ends. The eye is the only part of a hurricane you can appreciate while it is happening, and it is also the part that convinces people it is safe when it is not.
