Dolphin Is Weakening and the Danger Zone Is Growing: Both Are True at Once
The intensity number attached to Typhoon Dolphin is coming down. The area that has to worry about it is going up.

Those two things sound contradictory. They are not, and the gap between them is where people get hurt.
As of 4 August, Dolphin was northeast of Iwo To in the Ogasawara Islands, having just completed its fourth eyewall replacement cycle and reintensified to around 215 km/h sustained winds, with gusts near 260 km/h and significant wave heights around 16 metres.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has been carrying it as Typhoon No. 13, classified "very strong", with a central pressure around 945 hPa earlier in the week.
The forecast now brings it near Amami Oshima and Okinawa around 7 August, with winds expected to be lower by then — somewhere near 185 km/h at the point of closest approach. Okinawa Island alone has about 1.4 million people on it.
Lower winds. Bigger problem. Here is why.
The number that is falling and the number that is rising
Peak intensity describes one thing: the strongest sustained wind, in a narrow ring, near the centre.
That ring is small. In a compact, intense typhoon the most damaging winds may only cover a few dozen kilometres of ocean. Everything outside that ring is weaker, and the storm is still enormous.
What has been happening to Dolphin is a pattern forecasters see constantly and headlines almost never explain. As a mature typhoon moves poleward and starts interacting with cooler water and more wind shear, the peak intensity drops — and the circulation spreads out.
Current guidance has gale-force winds covering a swath of the East China Sea on the order of a thousand kilometres across within about five days, while the intensity figure keeps falling.
Read that again with the geography attached. A thousand kilometres is not a landfall point. It is Okinawa and Amami and the Ryukyus and a large part of the East China Sea and the coastal water off eastern China, all inside the same wind field, at the same time.
The eyewall replacement cycles are part of this. Each time an intense typhoon rebuilds its eyewall, the old one collapses outward and the new one forms at a wider radius. The peak wind usually drops during the process and often recovers afterwards — but the storm ends up structurally broader than it was. Dolphin has now been through four of them.
So the number in the headline gets smaller, and the storm gets wider. Both are the same process.
What that changes on the ground
Almost everything that actually disrupts a trip is driven by the wide part of the storm, not the core.
Ferries stop first. Inter-island services around Okinawa and Amami suspend on forecast sea state, not on landfall, and rough seas arrive well ahead of the centre. Local governments in the islands have already advised residents to secure property, stay away from the coast, and prepare for possible evacuation and power cuts.
Flights go next, and they go in a rolling pattern rather than all at once. An airline cancels a bank of departures, the aircraft ends up in the wrong city, and the disruption propagates through the following day even at airports the storm never reached.
Storm surge and swell do not respect the cone at all. A broad, slow, weakening system pushes more water for longer than a compact intense one moving fast. Some of the most damaging tropical cyclones on record were unremarkable by peak wind.
Rain is the other one. A system that slows down as it enters the East China Sea — which is what current guidance suggests happens after 8 August — has more time to deposit rain over the same ground. Slow and wet does more damage than fast and violent, and it does it further from the centre.
None of that is captured by a category number. The category is a measurement of the worst ring, and you are almost certainly not standing in the worst ring.
Where this site has been loose
Worth saying plainly, because it applies to our own headlines.
This site has used "Category 5" and category numbers generally as shorthand for western Pacific storms. That is a conversion from one-minute sustained wind data used by American agencies, not the official classification any regional agency issues. JMA uses descriptive tiers. Hong Kong uses numbered signals. The Philippines uses its own wind signals and its own storm names.
We have kept the shorthand because it communicates severity fast to an international audience. But it has a cost, and this storm is the cost: a falling category reads as "it is getting better", and for most people in Dolphin's path over the next several days, it is not.
We also ran a piece earlier this week framed around a Kyushu landfall on 7 August. The forecast has since shifted south, and the current guidance points at Okinawa and Amami around that date. That is not a small correction and it is worth stating rather than quietly updating.
Both of those are the same underlying mistake: treating a single number or a single point as the story, when the story is a wind field several hundred kilometres wide that is still moving.

For Okinawa and Amami specifically, the JMA warning for your municipality is the instruction. The international category number is a comparison tool for journalists, not guidance for anyone with a ferry booking.
The short version
Dolphin's peak winds are forecast to fall as it approaches the Ryukyus. Its wind field is forecast to expand at the same time.
Falling intensity and rising exposure are the normal behaviour of a maturing typhoon, not a contradiction.
The disruption you will actually experience — cancelled ferries, rolling flight cancellations, surge, rain — comes from the wide part of the storm.
And if you are watching the category number drop and feeling better about your Friday, that is exactly the wrong reading.
