Five Category 5 Storms Before August: What 2026 Is Doing Differently
Super Typhoon Dolphin reached Category 5 this week. It was the fifth tropical cyclone on Earth to do so in 2026, and July is not over.
Five is a lot for this point in the year. It is not a record, and it does not mean the planet has entered some new regime. But it is worth pausing on, because the reason it happened is not the one most people assume.

The count so far
Genevieve got there first, in the eastern Pacific. It peaked at 160 mph sustained winds west of Mexico — the season's first Category 5 anywhere — and then spent its entire life over open water. Nobody on land noticed.
Dolphin is the fifth, and the only one currently aimed at people. It formed in the western Pacific, ran up the scale fast, and is now expected to turn toward the Chinese coast in early August.
Notice what those two have in common. Both are Pacific storms. The Atlantic has contributed nothing to this list.
The Atlantic is asleep, and that is normal
The tropical Atlantic is currently sitting under a thick Saharan Air Layer — dust and hot dry air blown west off Africa. It arrived on schedule and it is doing what it always does.
Dry air starves developing thunderstorms of the moisture they need. Warm air aloft stabilises the column and discourages the deep convection that builds a hurricane core. And the layer usually travels with wind shear, which shreds anything that organises anyway.
Three suppressors at once. The Atlantic has produced one named storm of consequence this season, Arthur, which came ashore near Matagorda Bay in mid-June and fell apart within a day.
None of this forecasts September. The Atlantic peaks in early September, the dust usually thins by mid-August, and a quiet July has historically told us very little about what follows.
Where to check this yourself
Do not take any single blog's word for a storm, including this one. These are the agencies that actually issue the warnings, and they are the sources the numbers in this article come from.
- Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) — the official authority for Japanese waters, warnings and landfall.
- Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) — Korean track guidance and warnings.
- Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) — the US centre behind most Category-equivalent figures quoted for western Pacific storms.
- Hong Kong Observatory — clear track maps, and useful because it shows several agencies side by side.
- China National Meteorological Center — the authority for any Chinese landfall.
If those five disagree with each other, that disagreement is the story. It is the same spread this article is describing, and no blog resolves it faster than the agencies do.

Why the Pacific is loud
El Niño. Seasonal outlooks put the eastern and central Pacific above their historical averages for 2026 across named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes, and the season so far is delivering on that.
The mechanism is straightforward. El Niño warms the eastern Pacific and relaxes the wind shear there, which is close to ideal for development. The same atmospheric pattern does the opposite over the Atlantic, strengthening shear and holding storms down.
The two basins frequently trade places for exactly this reason. When one is busy, the other tends not to be. This year the split is unusually clean.
Category 5 is a peak, not a destiny
Here is the part that gets lost when a storm hits the top of the scale.
Genevieve peaked and dissipated without touching land. Fausto reached hurricane strength, aimed at Hawaii, and weakened to a tropical storm before passing north of the islands — the water there is cooler and the shear stronger, which is why Hawaii sees far fewer direct hits than its position suggests.
Dolphin is expected to follow the same script in a different ocean. Extended guidance drops it to Category 1 or 2 equivalent as it moves into the East China Sea, well before any coastline is involved.
A peak intensity number describes one moment over open ocean. It is the least useful figure for anyone deciding whether to change a flight.
What a Category 5 actually measures
Worth being precise about this, because the number is doing less work than people assume.
The Saffir-Simpson scale measures one thing: maximum sustained wind speed near the centre, averaged over one minute. That is the entire definition. Category 5 means those winds reached a threshold at a moment in time.
It does not measure how large the storm is. A compact Category 5 can affect a smaller area than a sprawling Category 2. It does not measure rainfall, which is what actually kills most people in tropical cyclones. It does not measure storm surge, which depends on the shape of the coastline and the angle of approach as much as on wind. And it says nothing about how long the storm will sit over one place, which is often the difference between an inconvenience and a disaster.
Different agencies also measure differently. The Japan Meteorological Agency averages wind over ten minutes rather than one, which produces a lower number for the same storm. China's scale uses different thresholds again. So the same typhoon can legitimately be described three ways on the same day, and none of them is wrong.
When you see a category number, read it as one measurement of one variable at one moment. It is a headline, not a forecast.

What to actually track
Of everything spinning right now, one storm merits attention: Dolphin, and only if you have travel to eastern China, Japan or Korea in the first ten days of August.
The rest is ocean.
