What Actually Cancels a Flight in a Typhoon (It Is Usually Not the Wind at Your Airport)

People assume flights are cancelled because the weather at the airport becomes too dangerous to fly in.

That happens, but it is not the most common reason. Most typhoon cancellations are decided long before the weather arrives, and several of them have nothing to do with conditions at your airport at all.

Knowing which mechanism is about to hit you changes what you should do, and when.

Reason one: the aircraft is somewhere else

This is the single most common cause and the least understood.

An aircraft flies a chain of sectors through the day. If a storm disrupts the morning rotation two cities away, the aircraft that was supposed to operate your evening flight never arrives.

Your airport can be perfectly calm and sunny and the flight still does not exist, because the metal is sitting on the wrong apron.

Airlines also deliberately evacuate aircraft out of an airport before a storm arrives, flying them empty to a safe field. Those aircraft then need to be flown back, which takes hours after the airport reopens.

This is why cancellations often begin before any bad weather is visible, and why the recovery is slow even once the sky clears.

Reason two: crew duty limits

Crews are legally limited in how long they can be on duty.

A long delay can push a crew past its limit even if the flight could physically operate. Once that happens the flight is cancelled unless a replacement crew is available, and during a regional disruption they usually are not, because they are stuck in the same system.

Reason three: crosswind, not wind speed

When weather at the field does cause the cancellation, the number that matters is usually not raw wind speed.

Every aircraft type has a crosswind limit, the maximum wind component across the runway that it is certified and the operator permits to land in. Straight-down-the-runway wind, even quite strong, is far less limiting.

This is why one flight lands and the next one diverts. A different type, a different operator's limit, a shifted wind direction by twenty degrees.

Heavy rain matters through visibility and through braking performance on a contaminated runway, rather than through the rain itself.

Reason four: the airport actually closes

Full closures are less common than people assume, and they are usually not about the runway.

Airports close when ground operations become unsafe. Loading, refuelling, towing and baggage handling are done by people outdoors, and those stop well before flying becomes impossible.

Ground stops also happen when equipment must be tied down, when the terminal loses power, or when the roads and rail links to the airport shut, which strands both passengers and staff.

Hong Kong is the clearest example of the last point. When Signal 8 goes up, the city stops moving, and the airport becomes hard to reach even when it is technically operating.

When the decision gets made

The pattern is fairly consistent across the region.

Around 48 to 72 hours out, airlines publish a travel waiver if the forecast looks serious. This is the point at which you can usually change your booking for free.

Around 24 hours out, the first cancellations appear, typically the flights scheduled during the expected worst window.

Around 12 hours out, the cancellation list expands as the airline reshapes the rest of the day around aircraft positioning.

Inside 6 hours, decisions are operational and fast.

The waiver is the moment to act. Once cancellations begin, you are competing with everyone else for the same limited seats.

The day after is often worse than the day of

This is the part people fail to plan for.

On the storm day, flights are cancelled and everyone accepts it. The following day the airport reopens, the weather looks fine, and there are now two days of passengers trying to fit into one day of seats.

Aircraft that were flown away have to return. Crews are out of position. The backlog can take two or three days to clear after a major disruption at a large hub.

A flight the day after a typhoon is not a safe booking. It is frequently the worst one.

What to do, in order

Turn on airline app notifications before the storm is near. The app usually knows before the call centre does, and often before the airport display boards.

Watch for the waiver rather than the cancellation. Changing under a waiver is free and gives you a choice of dates. Rebooking after a cancellation gives you whatever is left.

Move earlier rather than later if you can. The flights before the weather arrives operate normally, and they are the ones with the highest chance of departing.

Take the first departure of the day if you must fly close to the event. Aircraft are already in position overnight, and disruption accumulates through the day.

Build a buffer day before any international connection you cannot miss. This is the single most effective thing in this list.

Keep the booking rather than cancelling it yourself. A flight cancelled by the airline usually carries rights and rebooking assistance. A flight you cancelled voluntarily usually does not.

On insurance, briefly

Cover for weather disruption exists but varies enormously, and the timing rules are the part that catches people. Policies commonly exclude events that were already forecast or already named when you bought the cover.

This is genuinely a read-your-own-policy situation. We are not going to tell you what yours covers, because policies differ on exactly this point.

Where this site has been wrong

Earlier on this site we framed airport closure as the main mechanism of typhoon disruption. That framing was too simple.

Closures are real but comparatively rare. Aircraft positioning and crew limits cancel more flights than closed runways do, and they do it earlier and with less warning, often while the weather still looks fine.

The short version

Your flight is most likely cancelled because the aircraft is elsewhere, not because your airport is unsafe.

The waiver window, not the cancellation, is when you have options.

The day after is often harder than the day of.

And a buffer day before a connection you cannot miss will save you more trouble than any amount of tracking the storm.
