Typhoon, Hurricane, Cyclone: The Same Storm With Three Names (Basins, Wind Scales, Why It Matters)

Same storm. Same physics. Three different names.

A tropical cyclone spinning off Japan is a typhoon. Move it to Florida and it is a hurricane. Put it near Australia and it is a cyclone.

Nothing about the storm changes. Only the address does.

That sounds like trivia until you are trying to follow a storm across news sources and getting three different numbers for the same system. Then it stops being trivia.

Where the line actually falls

The dividing lines are longitude and equator. Not strength, not size, not danger.

North Atlantic and northeast Pacific: hurricane. That covers the Caribbean, the US Gulf coast, Mexico's Pacific side.

Northwest Pacific: typhoon. Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, China, Vietnam.

North Indian Ocean and the entire southern hemisphere: cyclone. India, Bangladesh, Australia, Mozambique.

The boundary in the Pacific sits at 180 degrees longitude. A storm that crosses it westward stops being a hurricane and becomes a typhoon mid-ocean, without doing anything at all.

It has happened. Storms have been renamed in transit, which produces a strange few hours of coverage where two names are live at once.

The word typhoon has a messier origin than the other two. Greek, Arabic, and Chinese all have candidate roots and nobody has settled it. Hurricane comes from a Caribbean deity. Cyclone was coined by a British official in India in the 1840s.

Why the numbers never match

This is the part that causes real confusion, and it has nothing to do with the names.

Agencies do not measure wind the same way.

US agencies use a one-minute sustained wind. Most of the rest of the world uses ten minutes.

A ten-minute average smooths out gusts that a one-minute average captures. Same storm, lower number, roughly ten to fifteen percent apart.

So a system reported at 260 km/h by an American source and 215 km/h by a Japanese one is not a disagreement about the storm. It is a disagreement about the stopwatch.

Then the scales themselves differ.

Saffir-Simpson gives Categories 1 through 5. Built for the Atlantic. No agency in the western Pacific issues official warnings in those categories, which is why "Category 5 super typhoon" in a headline is almost always a media conversion rather than an official classification.

Japan uses descriptive tiers instead of numbers. Strong, very strong, violent.

China runs its own ladder up to super typhoon, plus a colour warning system.

Hong Kong uses numbered signals — 1, 3, 8, 9, 10 — that describe what happens in Hong Kong rather than how strong the storm is out at sea. Signal 8 is the one that shuts the city.

The Philippines issues wind signals 1 through 5 and also assigns its own local name to any storm entering its zone.

That last one deserves its own line. The same storm can carry an international name and a Filipino name simultaneously. If you are reading across sources and think there are two storms, this is usually why.

Does the name change the danger

No. And that is the practical takeaway.

A cyclone in the Bay of Bengal can kill more people than a Category 4 hurricane, because the hazard is not wind category. It is storm surge over flat land, rainfall over mountains, and how many people live in the path.

Some of the deadliest tropical systems on record were unremarkable by wind measurement. They were slow, wet, and over the wrong terrain.

Category tells you about maximum sustained wind near the centre. That is one number describing one part of the storm.

It says nothing about size, forward speed, rainfall totals, or tide timing. Those are what actually decide the damage.

What to follow instead

The agency responsible for where you are standing.

In Japan, the JMA warning for your prefecture. In Hong Kong, the Observatory signal. In the Philippines, the PAGASA signal for your province. In Korea, the KMA advisory.

International category numbers are for comparing storms across years and basins. They are a journalism tool. Local warnings are instructions.

A storm can weaken from Category 5 to Category 2 and still shut your airport. It may have grown wider while weakening. It may have slowed down and doubled its rainfall.

Following the headline number alone will mislead you in both directions.

Where this site has been loose

Worth saying plainly.

This site uses Category 5 as shorthand in headlines about western Pacific storms. It communicates severity fast to an international audience, and that is why it stays.

But it is a conversion from one-minute wind data, not the official classification any regional agency issues. That distinction gets lost in most coverage, including sometimes here.

Pick the one covering where you are. Reading three at once produces confusion, not clarity.

The short version

Typhoon, hurricane, cyclone. Same storm, different ocean.

The numbers differ because of averaging periods and national scales, not because anyone is wrong.

Category 5 in a western Pacific headline is usually a translation.

And the name tells you nothing about whether it will ruin your week. The local warning does.
